How will Phi Alpha Delta help me? Being a pre-law student can be a confusing and difficult experience. Phi Alpha Delta seeks to bridge the gap between Berkeley students and a career in law by offering resources in order to develop professional skills, learn more about the law, and prepare for law school. Not only do we coordinate a plethora of professional events such as legal fields panels, law school admissions workshops, and networking opportunities, we also offer discounts for LSAT/GRE/Bar exam test prep companies and special benefits with internship organizations. To see our full list of membership benefits, click here. Thanks to our 600+ international pre-law, law, and alumni chapters, members benefit from an extensive, well-connected network eager to help those just beginning their professions in law. What makes Phi Alpha Delta different from other pre-law fraternities or pre-law organizations? Phi Alpha Delta is not only the oldest and largest pre-law fraternity here at UC Berkeley, it is also the only one with an international network of chapters (over 600 chapters around the world). In addition to that, Phi Alpha Delta was the first law fraternity to admit members of all races, creeds, colors, religions and national origins. In keeping with our tradition of inclusivity, Phi Alpha Delta is an open membership fraternity, meaning there is no formal pledging, "crossing", or hazing process.
How much of a time commitment is Phi Alpha Delta? During your first semester of Phi Alpha Delta, you participate in a semester of membership development, which involves getting to know the members of your class, building your resume, learning about the process of applying to law school, strengthening your professional skills, and much, much more. New members are also eligible to join one of our seven committees as an intern to take part in guiding the fraternity each semester. After completing membership development, new members may choose to invest more of their time into Berkeley PAD by interviewing to be a committee director, an associate director, or running for Executive Committee.
I can't pay the $120 semesterly fee up front, does that mean that I cannot be a member? No! We offer a payment plan that allows you to divide up payments to minimize the financial burden.
I don't really want to go to law school, does Phi Alpha Delta have anything to offer me? Our members come from a wide variety of backgrounds and are pursuing a wide variety of careers. The law isn't restricted to the traditional law school path and neither are our members. We have alums who go into consulting, journalism, computer science, and much, much more.
Is everyone in Phi Alpha Delta majoring in Political Science or Legal Studies? Just like the legal profession, our members' majors reflect a tremendous depth of intellectual diversity. Some of our current and past members have majored in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Rhetoric, Environmental Economics and Policy, English, History, Society and the Environment, Linguistics, Political Economy, Computer Science, Film, Media Studies, and much more.
Can I apply if I am not a freshmen? Phi Alpha Delta enthusiastically welcomes new members of all ages and years, including upper division students, transfer students, and re-entry students. Even if you are in your last year at UC Berkeley, Phi Alpha Delta can benefit you in many ways. In the past, we have had a diversity of ages and life experiences contribute to Phi Alpha Delta.
